Ref: DCLM Retreat children message

Ephesians 6:10-18; 2 Corinthians 10:3-6; Romans 13:12-14

All born again boys and girls are citizens of heaven and soldiers in the army of our Lord Jesus Christ. In every nation there are soldiers that form the army of the country. Some things are common about these soldiers: (i) They have songs that they sing (ii) They have uniform that they always put on (iii)They have armour that they put on to fight (iv) They are disciplined, always ready to fight and defend their nations at all cost. As Christian soldiers (boys and girls),we should also have all these characteristics, if we are to win in the battle against our greatest enemy, the Devil. The Bible says “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:” (1 Peter 5:8).

Satan is our adversary, the enemy of all true friends of Jesus. Immediately you give your life to Jesus and decide to follow Him, Satan begins to fight because he does not want anyone to go to heaven since he has lost his own chance. As friends of Jesus, we are soldiers of Christ.

We are called to defend our faith and deliver those who are still captives of the devil and win them to Christ. We therefore must always put on the “Whole Armour” God had provided for us and be ready to fight and have the victory over the devil and his agents. Children of God who are victorious will make it to heaven at last, wear a crown and reign with Jesus our Master.

Before we go into the message, let us sing this common song that Christian soldiers sing: “Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war, looking unto Jesus, Who is gone before…”

We shall consider our message under the following three points:

 Ephesians 6:10-18; 2 Corinthians 10:3-4.

Armour are the weapons that soldiers use to fight. Whenever a pupil enrolls in a school, such a pupil is given the school uniform and he/she is expected to have books and pens to write. When a young man or woman enroll in the army of his\her country, he/she is given the army uniform and the weapons to fight with. In the same way, a child that gives his/her life to Jesus Christ has enrolled in the heavenly army. He/she is now a soldier of Jesus Christ. He/she has been given the spiritual uniform to wear as a soldier of Christ. This uniform is a spiritual uniform because the kingdom of heaven is a spiritual kingdom and the battle is a spiritual battle. The weapons used by Christian soldiers are not physical weapons; they are spiritual.

The word of God says the weapons of our warfare are not carnal… (2 Corinthian 10:4). What are the pieces of the armour or weapons for Christian soldiers? They include: (i) The belt of Truth. (ii) The breastplate of righteousness; which is holiness of life (iii) Feet shod with preparation of the gospel of peace; preaching of the gospel to sinners. (iv) The shield of faith;

Faith that will quench every wicked arrow Satan may shoot (v) The helmet of salvation (vi) The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (vii) Prayers (vii) Watchfulness with perseverance.

As you put on the whole armour, you will always have victory.

 Ephesians 6: 10-18; Romans 13:12-14; 2 Corinthians 2:10

A child that refuses to put on the school uniform will not be allowed to enter the school and write exam that will give him/her promotion. Christian soldiers are also expected to put on the complete armour in order to be fit to fight the battle against Satan, our enemy. All the pieces of the armour we have mentioned are strong and powerful to defeat the devil. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds:” The weapons we have are strong enough to pull down all the strongholds of the Devil and defeat his army of demons and all evil spirits that work for the devil. The devil uses these demons and evil spirits, and sometimes human agents to attack children of God. They throw spiritual arrows (darts) of (i) Bad thoughts and evil imaginations (ii) failure (iii)

sicknesses and infirmities (iv) troubles and obstacles on the way of the Christian child

(v) hatred from wicked people (vi) fear and discouragement (vii) poverty among many others.

All these are some of the tricks and temptations of the devil, the enemy to bring doubt and unbelief in our hearts and make us consider going back from following Jesus.

How do we win? Just obey! Do as the word of God commands: “Put on the whole armour of God and fight to overcome; resist all temptations and stand firm in the faith of the victory that Jesus Christ has obtained for us on the cross at Calvary. To put on the complete Christian armour for the battle. You must do it in the right order and none must be left out: (i) The helmet of salvation must come first. You must be born again by giving your life to Jesus Christ and accept Him as your personal Savior and Lord (John 3:3,6-7) (ii) The belt of Truth. A bornagain Christian child speaks the truth always. If you are still telling lies to mummy, daddy, your teachers and to others, you are still being defeated. Tell the truth, even if you will be beaten. Tell the truth and let the devil be ashamed. (iii) The breastplate of righteousness. The righteous is as bold as a lion. To be righteous is to be holy. It is to do the right thing as the Bible commands us. It is to be obedient to the word of God always. Righteousness is obedience. (iv) Feet shod with preparation of the gospel of peace. The moment you are born again, tell others about your salvation. That is the first way to confirm your faith and let the devil know you are out of his cage. Preach the gospel to your friends, family members, school mates, and neighbours. (v) The shield of faith. The Christian life is a life of faith. Faith is trusting in the word of God. God cannot lie, whatever He has promised He will do. Trust in Him always. You will never be disappointed. (vi)The sword of the Spirit. Make the word of God your companion.

Read your Bible daily, believe the word of God and practice the word of God through obedience. (vii) Praying always. The Christian life is a life of prayer. Pray always. Pray without getting tired. Pray for yourself, pray for others to be born again, pray for the church, pray for the nation. Live a life of prayer in order to be strong. (viii) Always watching with perseverance.

Finally, you must be watchful. Be disciplined in all your ways. The Christian life demands serious discipline; the believer must be at alert and ready, giving no time to careless or carefree lifestyle. “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier” (2 Timothy 2:4).

 Romans 13:12-14; 2 Corinthians 10: 3-6; Revelation 12:11

The Christian soldier will have victory only if he/she makes use of the spiritual armour in the right way. The Captain of our army is the Lord Jesus Christ. He has fought and defeated the devil permanently over two thousand (2,000) years ago. On the cross He said, “it is finished”.

He has also given us the amour to fight and win in every battle as He won. Therefore, every saved friend of Jesus is a winner in any battle. As friends of Jesus, we are to fight and never be defeated in any battle. We have a sure and permanent victory through the Lord Jesus Christ (Revelation 12:11). Many rewards await those who will daily overcome and get to heaven at last. Some of these rewards are: (i) Special fruit of the tree of life in paradise (Revelation 2:7) (ii) Hope of eternal life and escape from everlasting suffering in the lake of fire (Revelation 2:11) (iii) Power to rule over nations (Revelation 2:26) (iv) Holy garment and name written in the book of life (Revelation 3:12) (v) Reigning with Jesus Christ in heaven (Revelation 3:21). (vi)

Everlasting life of joy, peace and total freedom (Revelation 21:4) “He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son” (Revelation 21:7). This is the final and permanent victory waiting for you as a true soldier of Christ. Yes! You can win and overcome if you will. Rise, pray and ask the Lord Jesus to help you.
